Warning ! Last Call for Theme 6 Living In This New World: All together or me first ?
PORTRAITS OF A NEW WORLD explores the 21st century through six themes (four documentaries per theme) :
In just 30 years, China has become the third most powerful economy in the world. What is the impact of this rapid ascension on the daily life of Chinese people—their society, work, and landscape? Will China profit from this incredible boom and expand its power into the rest of the world?
We don’t need any projects for this theme. Four multimedia documentaries are already in production :
- - A Concubine’s diary, by Axelle de Russé, Marina de Russé and Elsa Fayner
- - The Desertification Train, by Benoit Aquin and Patrick Alleyn
- - A Mingong in Beijing, by Gilles Sabrié
- - Chinese Safari in Africa, by Serge Michel and Paolo Woods
According to the International Organization of Migration, every year 200 million people migrate from their homes in search of work or a better life. The acceleration of immigration leads us to choices: will we open our borders and accept all immigrants? Or will we rather build walls. So far globalization has not abolished borders: of the 248,000 kilometres of land borders, 26,000 were created since 1991.
We seek proposals on migrants, and on places in the midst of ethnic or national flux, they can be neighbourhoods or cities or societies, both old and new.

In developing nations, each week 3 million people are resettling from the countryside to the city. The global urban population has exceeded 50% in 2007 and is expected to reach70% by 2050 according to the UN. This rural exodus is creating urban sprawl and megapoles. In either case there’s a rising pressure to find housing, work, and basic resources. The borders between rich and poor are growing more and more solid.
We are seeking proposals on megapoles, demographics, urban sprawl, cities of the future, housing, ghettoization of urban space, the consequences of urbanization on the environment…
Deadline for Proposals: November 1st, 2009
The financial crisis of 2008 has shown a light on the limits of the capitalist system as we’ve experienced it in the last decades—excessive speculation, inequality of wealth, and overexposure of emerging countries to the global market. How can we construct a more durable and fair system?
We seek proposals on the social impact of the crisis—rapid globalization, economic speculation, initiatives for a more just economic system, the evolution of labour, or the enrichment of developing countries.
Deadline for Proposals : November, 15th, 2009
Global warming, drying up of water sources, harmful exploitation of natural resources…Is the planet on its last breath ? Will recent awareness of the ecological threat change the fate of the planet ? Will refugees from the climate become more and more numerous ?
We are seeking proposals on global warming, pollution, resource scarcity, climate migration, sustainable development, Kyoto, and other initiatives for a more sustainable development.
Deadline for Proposals: December 15th, 2009
Is the planet becoming a global village? Our fate has never been so connected to one another. Yet in reaction, there’s a simultaneous reversion to insularity—individual, tribal, national. We draw closer to those we resemble and repel the Other.
We are seeking proposals on the evolution of social structures—family, neighbourhood, school, individual, Europe, new regulations driven by international institutions…
Deadline for Proposals: September 6th, 2010
